I often asked this question myself and would wonder about it whenever the flight attendant talked about safety measures.
After some research, I found the answer that drives the logic for not having airplane passengers’ parachutes.
1) Lack of Time: If you recall the time you boarded the plane, you will realize that the time required to board the plane in a rightful manner is somewhere around 30 mins. This time is not enough to put on a parachute and jump of the airplane that too in a mode of panic.
2) Lack of Training: Using a parachute requires training. It is not practically possible to impart successful training to each passenger who boards the plane.
3) Oxygen Supply: The height between 31,000 and 38,000 feet at which commercial planes fly is too high and if you happen to jump out of the plane without getting injured, you may faint or lose consciousness because of a lack of oxygen at such heights
4) Safety concerns: It is not advisable to jump out of a plane flying at fast speeds such as 500 miles per hour as it can lead to injuries because of air pressure, temperature, and winds.
5) Cost and weight of parachutes: To arrange parachutes for every person on the plane, the cost will go up. Around 3000 kgs extra weight will be added because of parachutes, making the flights costlier.
I hope this answers your question.
Peace!
